Five More States Announce Broadband Projects
Posted July 2nd, 2010 by BfA StaffToday’s announced broadband investments from the White House will bring expanded high-speed access and adoption to all 50 states. Here is a look at some of the specific projects getting underway in conjunction with the new round of public-private investments:
Colorado: $5.2 million will go toward a project in the north-central region of the state, bringing broadband access to about 200 businesses and 1,000 residents through the Nunn Telephone Co. "Expanding Internet access is a 21st-century version of Roosevelt's rural electrification program or Eisenhower's interstate highway system," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said. Read more here.
Massachusetts: $45.4 million will go toward a broadband access project in rural parts of Western Massachusetts. The state will produce $26.2 million in matching funds, to help build more than 1,300 miles of fiber cable, which could reach up to 1 million residents, 44,000 businesses and 700 community centers. The project is expected to create several hundred jobs. “I cannot overstate the value of this project for the communities of Western and North-Central Massachusetts that have gone without reliable high speed broadband service for too long,” Governor Deval L. Posted March 31st, 2010 by BfA StaffFive more states have launched new broadband efforts designed to increase high-speed Internet access, improve medical health records and improve state facilities that provide broadband access to the public. Here is a look at some of those projects being announced:
Massachusetts: Gov. Deval Patrick announced his state has applied for a $45.4 million federal stimulus grant to expand broadband access in the western part of the state. “Bringing adequate broadband service to unserved and under-served communities in western Massachusetts has been a priority of my administration from the start,” Patrick said. The project would build 1,338 miles of fiber, connecting businesses, homes, hospitals, public libraries and community colleges. Read the full story here.
Missouri: Gov. Jay Nixon’s office will submit 12 broadband proposals for stimulus grants as part of the MoBroadbandNow effort. The project’s goal is to expand broadband access to 95 percent of the state. Read the full story here.
New Hampshire: Network New Hampshire, a coalition of public and private sector groups, are applying for a $66 million grant to expand broadband access across the state.“The middle-mile network is seen as a major opportunity for economic development,” said George Bald, commissioner of the state’s Department of Resources and Economic Development, in a news release about the application. Posted March 30th, 2010 by BfA StaffFour more states announced projects to expand broadband access, increase adoption numbers and modernize state agencies. Here is a look at some of the projects getting underway:
Kentucky: Connected Nation is developing a $78 million plan combining public and private funding to bring high-speed Internet access to all state residents over the course of two years. CEO Brian Mefford said the project would also include broadband training courses. “The biggest barriers have to be addressed to get those people online,” Mefford said. “This program will begin addressing those barriers starting with the poorest of the poor.” The project will also create jobs in tech support and broadband education. “We’ll also be looking for other adults in the community who are technology savvy,” Mefford said, “who might be interested in being that type of ongoing resource.” Read the Daily News story here.
Minnesota: The Blandin Foundation has received a $4.7 million grant to be distributed through 19 rural community partners, including state workforce centers and state university system. The project will not actually build broadband fiber or wireless towers, but will seek to improve adoption and awareness of existing broadband capabilities. In Michigan: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the state a federal grant of $14.9 million dollars toward building a statewide health information technology network:
The goal is to give residents and health care providers greater access to patient records and health care information and enable providers across the state to share electronic records.
In New Jersey: The Commerce Department also awarded the Garden State $2 million toward their broadband mapping projects, which extend over five years.
In Pennsylvania: The state will receive $99.6 million in federal funding toward a 1,700 mile, statewide broadband network that will bring broadband access to 22 underserved counties. The funding comes after a joint request from Pennsylvania universities, health care organizations and economic development groups. In addition, $29 million in private funds will go toward building the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN).
In Utah: The Commerce Department awarded the state a $13.4 million grant designed to “boost economic growth, create jobs and improve education,” in the state through a “Broadband Technologies Program.” Primarily, the project will allow Utah to expand broadband access through public schools, community institutions, libraries and Head Start centers.
