Rural and Tribal Broadband Projects Launch in Three More States

Arizona: A $10.4 million project is being launched to provide broadband access to tribal communities. The San Carlos Apache Telecommunications Utility, Inc. (SCATUI) will head the project, which is expected to expand high-speed Internet access to 6,000 people, 20 businesses and 50 community institutions. "The expansion of this crucial infrastructure will bring broadband and telephone services and provide much-needed support for homes, businesses, medical facilities and emergency personnel," said Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick. "This project will create jobs, attract new businesses and create a 21st century foundation for future growth." Read more about the project here.
Arizona Libraries Receive New Broadband Connections
Posted June 2nd, 2010 by BfA StaffAs part of the national broadband stimulus, 84 libraries across Arizona are set to receive 1,000 new computers with broadband access. According to reports, the computers will be used to aid in job searches and skilled training:
"This project is an investment toward the future prosperity of the county," said Pinal County Library Director Denise Keller. "Our residents will have access to the latest technology to help them in job searches, online training opportunities, distance learning programs, research and more. It's a proven fact that when the economy starts sliding, library usage goes up. We will be equipping people with the tools they need to succeed as the economy starts recovering."

Navajo Nation Begins Major Broadband Expansion
Posted March 26th, 2010 by BfA StaffNavajo Nation communities in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah will receive $32 million in funding to expand broadband to the largest American Indian reservation. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) is providing an additional $11.3 million in matching funds.
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke made the announcement yesterday, saying the completed project will bring broadband access to 30,000 homes, 1,000 businesses and 1,100 community institutions. The project will cover more than 15,000 miles of Navajo Nation territory and create jobs through the construction of 530 miles of fiber cable.
"It's going to help us. Someone has said we're 30 years behind the times. I believe it. ... I see it," Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said. "This infusion of new capital is going to bring us a long ways in terms of helping us to catch up with the mainstream."

Three More States Announce Broadband Initiatives

They include an unprecedented access project to bring high-speed Internet to tribal areas and plans to upgrade several statewide community centers which provide job training and educational opportunities:
In Arizona: An ambitious 27,000 mile fiber deployment project in the Navajo Nation is getting underway. “The Navajo Nation has traditionally suffered from a lack of connectivity,” said Monroe Keedo, IT manager for NTUA. “The Navajo Nation will benefit from this project in four big ways: economic development, education, public safety and health care.” Read the full story here.
In Nevada: A $4.7 million investment will go toward upgrading broadband access at eight Las Vegas community centers. 29 sites and 100 computer work stations are expected to be equipped with previously unavailable high-speed Internet access. Read the Las Vegas Sun story here.
In North Dakota: The town of Hillsboro will receive nearly half a million dollars in grants and loans to upgrade nearly 800 broadband sites in the Traill County town. You can read the full breakdown here.
