After the FCC finally published their net neutrality regulations in the Federal Register late last month, the opposition begin identifying ways to overturn the rules. So what’s next for net neutrality? Currently, the Internet regulations are facing lawsuits from industry leaders who filed shortly after the rules were published. The rules were sent to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals which shot down the FCC’s prior attempt at net neutrality regulations last year.
 
An effort well underway in Congress could also overturn the rules. Under the Congressional Review Act, lawmakers can repeal Federal agency regulations, requiring only a simple majority vote in the Senate rather than the usual 60 votes to invoke cloture. Additionally, multiple studies have released data showing the harm net neutrality will have on the Internet industry. A study by the New York Law School’s Advanced Communications Law and Policy Institute, for example, estimates the rules will cost at least 500,000 jobs over the long run and cause a multi-billion dollar drop in GDP.
 
The Internet was established and has thrived in a free market. Due to the nature of the Internet and the role ISPs play in managing data traffic, many agree there is no need to impose burdensome regulations on the industry.
