Spectrum Debate Is Heating Up
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski continues to warn that there will be a spectrum crunch because of increasing demand caused by mobile devices. According to a New York Times op-ed, "a disproportionate amount of spectrum is allocated for older technologies or for applications that are declining in use, like broadcast television stations, while large swaths of spectrum are assigned to government agencies that may not be using it or using it efficiently."
But Representative John Conyers (D-Mich) fears that the current plans under consideration to incentivize broadcasters to give up their spectrum could hurt Detroit broadcasters in his Congressional District. The ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee has stated that while he agrees that there is a need for a national public safety community network for first responders, he wants to "ensure that local broadcasters are not harmed in this process."
