Consumer Demand for Broadband Continues to Drive Economic Recovery
As the overall economy continues the long road to recovery, we’ve been bringing you stories of how broadband-powered industries continue to lead that recovery effort. These telecom fields continue to set the pace for new job hires, and infrastructure deployment, all while responding to an ever-growing consumer demand.
The latest example of the broadband recovery comes in the smart phone and digital video field, where Broadcom posted record second quarter profits based on the growing demand for consumer electronics. From The Wall Street Journal:
Broadcom--whose chips are used to power Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPad as well as to send data in cell phones, home networks and across wireless infrastructure--posted record second-quarter sales on strong demand for electronic devices. The company, which has been gaining market share in handsets, also has benefited from the resolution of several lawsuits and the growth of digital media.
"We anticipate that increasing demand for communications solutions and market share gains will drive strong revenue growth for Broadcom in the third quarter," Chief Executive Scott McGregor said.
The increased demand will come from different business sources, Broadcom executives said during a conference call to discuss the earnings. In particular, demand for the company's infrastructure products is expected to rise as people buy more smartphones and as broadband Internet access reaches more homes.
"Generally we see after large increases in broadband, it's usually followed by large increases in infrastructure," McGregor said. Read more here.
