Cell Phones Target Of Driver Distraction Program
In 2009, 20 percent of drivers involved in fatal accidents were using a cell phone at the time of the crash. In a constantly connected society, we can’t take away cell phones, but there can be preventive safety measures enforced to ensure mobile devices are not a distraction behind the wheel. The Senate is attempting to do just that. Senators began work this week on a bill that would provide $10 million in grant funds aimed at incentivizing states to adopt and enforce laws that prevent distracted driving, specifically focusing on texting bans. The legislation is ultimately intended to aid in reducing the number of accidents caused by texting and driving or other distractions due to the use of mobile devices. An additional $5 million would be used for the development and implementation of broadcast and print media advertising to support enforcement of state laws to prevent cell phone use while driving.
