The National Journal reports that the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade has scheduled a hearing for October 25 on Internet gambling. The Subcommittee is expected to discuss legislation submitted by Representative Joe Barton and Representative Barney Frank that would permit online betting on poker and allow the U.S. Department of Commerce to establish licensing and consumer protection regulations.

On the spectrum front, the FCC has been warning us that our wireless broadband consumption is outstripping its growth. According to a graphic released by the FCC, "mobile tablets use 122x more data than smartphones." This means that there's going to be some massive network congestion if we don't find a way to allocate more spectrum to broadband services.

An FCC official argued that requiring broadband companies to report glitches helps with cybersecurity and network reliability issues according to a CNET article. In May, the FCC demanded more data from broadband providers because "it would enable the FCC to track and analyze information on outages affecting 911 service over broadband networks and determine if action is needed to prevent future outages from occurring." The problem with this request? Congress never issued the FCC the authority to regulate this area.

According to Nextgov, the first "multi-activity music and fitness tracking device with the brains to push you beyond your limits" is now on the market. The tool plays music, tracks the user's heartbeat and uploads "performance data" (like time, distance, speed, heart rate and calories burned) for analysis wirelessly.
