On Thursday, a unique, bipartisan group of six former Members of Congress announced the launch of their new effort to promote fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction. The Coalition for a Fiscally Sound America aims to enact into law a deficit reduction package that contains both pro-growth tax reform, and federal spending and entitlement reform sufficient to stabilize the debt. The National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, chaired by Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, is a starting point for the coalition to promote common sense, non-ideological fiscal reform.

The six members leading the coalition include: the Hon. Steve Bartlett (R-TX), the Hon. Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN), the Hon. Steve Largent (R-OK), the Hon. Dave McCurdy (D-OK), the Hon. Charlie Stenholm (D-TX), and the Hon. Tom Tauke (R-IA). Steve Largent and Tom Tauke currently represent Broadband for America members CTIA – The Wireless Association and Verizon, respectively. Former Congressman Harold Ford Jr. serves as Broadband for America Honorary Co-Chairman.

While the coalition was formed by a group of former members with various backgrounds, they share the common understanding that the basic building blocks of our economy must be repaired before there can be any progress in job creation and innovation to build this country. “With our national debt rapidly increasing as a share of our total economy and our nation’s economic growth stagnated, we can no longer wait for the next generation to make the tough decisions necessary to resolve our fiscal issues. We believe that the vast majority of Americans are willing to do what is necessary now to ensure a bright future for themselves and their children.” Tauke remarked.

The Coalition for a Fiscally Sound America understands how critical it is for Congress to reduce the Federal deficit, and the leaders are working with their peers on the Hill to stress this urgency to the  Supercommittee. Forty-five Senators and one hundred representatives sent letters to the Supercommittee urging them to do whatever it takes to find a solution to the four-trillion dollar deficit reduction. Additionally, the coalition is calling on the American people to contact their elected officials and ask them to enact legislation which will reduce the debt and restore prosperity in our nation.
