Back in the 1990s, schools started offering a few online classes to teach Advanced Placement and foreign languages to high school students. Today, the trend has grown significantly with 30 states now allowing students to take all of their courses online. In the past few months, Virginia, Florida, Idaho and Georgia have all implemented online programs into mainstream schools. Nationwide, an estimated 250,000 students are enrolled in full-time virtual schools.

Not only are schools saving money by offering courses online, but students are able to benefit from flexible schedules and customized curricula to meet individual needs. For example, students who may be more advanced in reading or math are able to learn at a higher grade level than their peers.
